The Conquest of Sunda Kelapa & Birth of Jayakarta

Demak-Cirebon forces led by Fatahillah successfully seized the Sunda Kelapa port from the Portuguese on June 22, 1527, and renamed it Jayakarta, meaning "City of Victory." This date is now celebrated annually as Jakarta's Anniversary.

Establishment of Colonial Batavia by the VOC

VOC Governor-General Jan Pieterszoon Coen conquered Jayakarta and built a new Dutch-style colonial walled city named Batavia. It served as the administrative and trade hub for the VOC's spice empire across Southeast Asia.
