Tari Topeng Betawi (Traditional Betawi Mask Dance)
Tari Topeng Betawi is a revered cultural heritage of the Betawi people that is inherently theatrical and communicative. Historically performed as a roaming street act (ngamen), it originally held spiritual significance to ward off bad luck or express gratitude after harvest seasons. Its primary hallmark lies in the unique strapless wooden masks, which female dancers hold in place by clamping a small inner leather tab with their teeth. The performance portrays diverse human temperaments through three main mask characters: Panji (refined/white), Samba (lively/pink), and Jingga (bold/deep crimson). Accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of the Gamelan Topeng Betawi orchestra, this dance is widely staged today during traditional wedding celebrations or cultural festivals to enliven the atmosphere.
