Al-Mashun Grand Mosque
Al-Mashun Grand Mosque is one of the most magnificent and historic landmarks in Medan, North Sumatra. Built in 1906 and completed in 1909, this mosque is a legacy of the Deli Sultanate. Its captivating architectural beauty is a harmonious blend of Middle Eastern, European (particularly Spanish and Dutch), and Malay styles. The large main dome is surrounded by four smaller domes, creating a distinctive and charming silhouette.
Designed by Dutch architect J.A. Tingdeman, Al-Mashun Grand Mosque utilized high-quality materials imported directly from Europe, such as marble from Italy and stained glass from Germany. The mosque's interior is equally enchanting with sturdy pillars, beautiful calligraphic ornaments, and crystal chandeliers that emit a warm glow. This mosque not only serves as the primary place of worship for Muslims in Medan but also as an important cultural center and religious tourist destination, attracting thousands of visitors annually to admire its beauty and history.
