Serampang Dua Belas Dance

The Serampang Dua Belas dance is a traditional dance originating from the Malay Deli region of North Sumatra. Created by Guru Sauti in the 1940s, it has become a cultural icon of Medan. The name 'Twelve' (Dua Belas) refers to the twelve dance patterns that depict the stages of a romantic relationship, from the first meeting and courtship to the final union in holy matrimony. The accompanying music is highly dynamic with a distinct Malay rhythm, making it a highly popular performance in traditional ceremonies and cultural festivals throughout Medan.
